SAFE?

By

Teresa A. James

A frightened child

Once more running

Into whispering fog

Is like a deer under

Threat of a hunter’s knife.

Through the ghostly trees

Lungs burning acid

Heart racing to reach

Into a fortress keep.

Across silvered meadows

Under black midnight skies

Pounding the eerie silent earth

Shredding autumn’s leaves underfoot

Heart aching, threatening to burst.

Dodging branches on the left

Dodging shadows from the right

Senses sharpen at the ghostly sights

And once again her feet take flight.

Into the welcoming cave

Through a silent tunnel deep

Into nature’s womb

Safe from worldly wrath

She feels safe at last.
